Ancient Assyria

Assyria was a powerful ancient civilisation in northern Mesopotamia. The Assyrians built great cities, maintained a large army and created one of the first big libraries at Nineveh. Their empire stretched over a large area of the Middle East.

The library at Nineveh contained tens of thousands of clay tablets, many of which survive today. These tablets help historians understand the language, laws and stories of ancient Mesopotamia.
