Before money existed, people traded goods directly, which was called bartering. A farmer might swap grain for a tool, but it was hard to find someone who wanted exactly what you had. Money was invented to make trade easier and fairer.
Early money included shells, beads and metal bars. The first coins were made in Lydia, in modern Turkey, about 2,600 years ago. Coins were easy to carry and their value was stamped on them, which made buying and selling simpler.
