The Pyramids of Giza

The Pyramids of Giza were built as tombs for Egyptian pharaohs about 4,500 years ago. The Great Pyramid was the tallest human-made structure for thousands of years.

Workers who built them were skilled craftspeople and labourers.

The Great Pyramid was built for the pharaoh Khufu and is the largest of the three. It was made from millions of stone blocks, some weighing several tonnes each.

Workers who built the pyramids were organised into teams and were well fed. Scientists still study how the enormous stones were moved and lifted into place, and the pyramids remain one of the wonders of the ancient world.
