Column Addition

Column addition lines up numbers by place value so you can add them one column at a time. Start with the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds. If a column adds up to more than nine, carry the extra tens to the next column.

Column addition is one of the oldest written methods for adding large numbers. Writing numbers neatly in columns helps you avoid mistakes, especially when adding several large numbers together.
