Division

Division means sharing equally or splitting into groups. 12 รท 3 = 4 because 3 ร— 4 = 12.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact

You cannot divide by zero.

All about Division

Division splits a number into equal groups or shares it equally among people. Division is the opposite of multiplication, so knowing your times tables helps you divide quickly.

Some divisions leave a remainder. For example, 13 รท 4 = 3 remainder 1, because four groups of 3 make 12 and one is left over. Long division breaks bigger problems into smaller steps.

The number being divided is the dividend, and the number you divide by is the divisor. The answer is called the quotient. If you share 12 sweets between 3 friends, each friend gets 4.

Since 3 ร— 4 = 12, you know that 12 รท 3 = 4.

Frequently asked questions about Division

What is a remainder?

The amount left over when a number cannot be shared equally. In 17 รท 5, the answer is 3 remainder 2.

Can you divide by zero?

No. Division by zero is undefined, because you cannot share something into zero groups.

How is division related to multiplication?

Division undoes multiplication. If 6 ร— 7 = 42, then 42 รท 7 = 6 and 42 รท 6 = 7.
