All about File Extensions
A file extension is the short group of letters after the dot at the end of a file name. For example, . jpg is used for photos, . docx for Word documents and . mp3 for music. The extension tells the computer which program should open the file.
It is safer not to change extensions unless you know what they mean. Looking at the extension can also help you spot files that may be unsafe.
