All about Madagascar
Madagascar is a large island off the south-east coast of Africa. It split from the African mainland millions of years ago, which allowed many animals and plants to evolve in isolation. Lemurs, chameleons and many unusual plants live here and nowhere else.
Because so much of its wildlife is unique, Madagascar is a priority for conservation. Forests are under pressure from farming and logging, so local groups and scientists work to protect important habitats.
