All about Mount Everest

Mount Everest is the highest mountain above sea level, at about 8,849 metres. It lies in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and China.

Climbers need oxygen support near the summit because the air is very thin.

Climbers attempt to reach its summit each year, but the high altitude, cold and wind make the climb extremely dangerous.

The air at the top of Everest has about a third of the oxygen found at sea level, so climbers use oxygen tanks and spend weeks acclimatising. Many people have climbed the mountain, and the first to reach the summit were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
