All about Sprains and Strains

A sprain is an injury to a ligament, while a strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon. Rest, ice, compression and raising the limb can help while you get checked.

Always tell an adult about any injury that is painful or swollen.

Both are often caused by sudden twists, falls or overusing a muscle. They can cause pain, swelling and difficulty moving.

For a minor sprain or strain, rest the injured part, use an ice pack wrapped in a cloth for short periods and raise the limb if you can. Tell an adult if the pain is severe or does not get better.
