Electromagnetic waves are waves of energy that do not need a material to travel through. They can move through empty space. Radio waves, microwaves, visible light, X-rays and gamma rays are all types of electromagnetic waves.
Radio waves have very long wavelengths, while gamma rays have very short ones and carry much more energy. Our eyes can only see a small part of this range, which we call visible light.
