All about Moons of Mars

Mars has two small, irregular moons named Phobos and Deimos. They are probably captured asteroids rather than moons that formed alongside the planet. Both moons are shaped like lumpy potatoes and are heavily cratered.

Phobos is very close to Mars and orbits the planet about three times a day. Deimos is further away and takes about 30 hours to orbit. From the surface of Mars, Phobos appears to rise in the west and set in the east, which is the opposite of the Sun.
