Space Debris

Space debris is any human-made object left in orbit around Earth that no longer has a useful purpose. It includes old rockets, broken satellites and tiny flakes of paint. Even very small pieces can travel fast enough to damage working spacecraft.

Space agencies track thousands of pieces of debris and sometimes move satellites to avoid collisions. Scientists are also developing ways to remove old satellites, so that space stays safe for future missions.
