Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs are small mammals covered in sharp spines made from modified hairs. When they feel threatened, they roll into a tight ball so only their spines are showing. They are mostly active at night and eat insects, worms and slugs.

Hedgehogs are good climbers and swimmers and can travel long distances in a single night. In winter, many hedgehogs hibernate in a nest of leaves. Gardens with hedges, log piles and wild corners can help hedgehogs find food and shelter.
