Carbon

Carbon is an element found in all living things. It can form many different materials, from soft graphite in pencils to hard diamonds. Carbon atoms can link together in long chains, which is why carbon is the basis of life.

Pencil lead is made from graphite, which is a form of carbon, not lead metal. Carbon dioxide, which contains carbon, is also a gas that plants use to make food during photosynthesis.
