The Speed of Light

Light travels extremely fast, at about 300,000 kilometres every second in a vacuum. Nothing in the universe is known to travel faster than light. Even so, the distances in space are so vast that light can take years to cross them.

Light from the Sun takes about eight minutes to reach Earth. When we look at distant stars, we are seeing light that left them many years ago.
